A client in Chicago asked: should you do ab exercises if you have back pain? Do planks, sit ups, and crunches solve everyone’s back pain?

Short answer: IT DEPENDS. Ab exercises MIGHT help, but they don’t ALWAYS help! So if they aren’t helping (or are making things worse), you shouldn’t emphasize them!

Do joints and bones wear out due to impact?

Matt and Josh talk about the effect of aging, impact, and strength training on your body.

TL;DR: The ability to absorb impact is dependent on your muscles’ ability to position your body parts in a way that allows muscles to decelerate the motion and absorb the force of landing. Bones themselves need only be able to withstand a minimal amount of force if the muscles are able to take on the brunt of the impact.

Pancake leg lifts – how complicated are hip muscles?

Matt shows you a difficult hip exercise that illustrates how difficult it can be to use your hip muscles properly. The pancake splits leg lifts force your hip flexors to work in a shortened position, and little angle changes can make it extremely difficult to even find and recruit the correct muscles.
